OUR 2024 HOLY SMOKES SPEAKER: Fr. Jonathan Norton

Father Jonathan Norton is a priest of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend. He was ordained on June 6, 2015, and assigned as parochial vicar at St. Vincent de Paul in Fort Wayne. In 2018, he was blessed to become pastor of a hidden gem in our diocese, Sacred Heart Parish and School in Warsaw.

Born in Texas, and going through elementary school in Georgia, the Norton family moved to Fort Wayne in 1993. Father Jonathan graduated from Bishop Luers High School in 2000. Initially pursuing (and failing) engineering classes at Indiana Tech, he resolved to work full-time at Mike's Express Carwash as a manager for several years. It was here that he learned much about leadership and customer service which could be applied to his later vocation.

Though his faith and attendance at Mass lagged for a few years, it sprung back much like the Prodigal Son, left starving for the good his Father. Once offered, Fr. Jonathan returned to the practice of the Catholic Church. Thanks to good Catholics whom God put into his life, and especially the discovery of Eucharistic Adoration, Fr. Jonathan soon began hearing a calling to the priesthood once again. After initially being deferred for 2 years, he was accepted by Bishop John D'Arcy as a seminarian for Fort Wayne-South Bend. He received formation for the priesthood from Immaculate Heart of Mary seminary in Winona, Minnesota and Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

The seeds of his vocation were sown long before his formal education. As a young boy serving at Mass on his father's military base in Albany, Georgia, Fr. Jonathan encountered a Marine chaplain who would become instrumental in nurturing his call to the priesthood. Now Fr. Jonathan is blessed with the opportunity to walk with men in their discernment as he was named Director of Seminarians in 2018 (happily remaining pastor of Sacred Heart).

Father Jonathan has served as the pastor of Sacred Heart in Warsaw for six years, a role he cherishes deeply. He finds immense joy in the parish's vibrant community and takes pride in its excellent (and, hopefully, expanding) school. Outside of his pastoral duties, he finds solace in camping and riding his mountain bike along the scenic trails of Winona Lake.
